Hey everyone, long time no see!

Hey guys this posts is probably going to just be a ramble, but I haven't posted in a while so I figured I'd give you guys a really nice post on a bunch of things!

To start off with I must say basketball has been going extremely well. Within the last week I realized something that I haven't been using in over a year. 2 Years ago, as well as last year I was a very prolific scorer because I wasn't afraid to get into 2 people and split them right through the middle going the whole way and I realized now I was afraid of those opportunities and thus haven't been as aggressive. Last game, I started to attack those holes again and realized how beneficial it really is. Anywho, just a tip to anyone, evaluate how you're playing and figure out what you need to change in order to become more successful!

Another thing is guys holy! I found an awesome youtube channel that helps with a lot of basketball you can find the link here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/dreupt

Alright now to the main point of this post!:

I've realized a lot of people are heading into university and college some for basketball, and others just for academics. I live in Canada so I'm not going to go into all this detail about Division 1 colleges and crap in the US, one day I'll get into those as I am "fairly" knowledgeable about those (Note I use the term fairly lightly). Anywho, I figured I'd post about some Universities up here in Canada!!! Yaay D: LOL.

Alright here's athletics, or more specifically basketball:

Some universities in Canada which I believe offer a good basketball program are the following:
(Yes I know CIS is a joke, but we are talking about Canada)

Carleton University:

Located in the capital city of Canada, Ottawa.
Went 22-0 this year in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was 22 wins in a row (obviously)

Lakehead University

Located in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Went 20-2 this year in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was 10 wins in a row.

University of Alberta

Located in Edmonton, Alberta
Went 14-6 this year in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was 4 wins in a row.

University of Victoria

Located in Victoria, British Columbia.
Went 14-4 this year in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was 6 wins in a row (Could be incorrect.)

McMaster University

Located in Hamilton, Ontario.
Went 17-5 this season in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was 8 wins in a row.

Laurier University

Located in Waterloo, Ontario.
Went 16-6 this season in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was LOSING 3 games in a row.

University of Windsor

Locaed in Windsor, Ontario.
Went 15-7 this season in CIS Men's basketball.
Biggest streak was winning 3 games in a row.

I myself if I keep going will probably go somewhere in Manitoba as I don't really want to move :(!
Anywho, hope you all got some information from this post even if you're not from Canada, really appreciate all of you!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and I'll be hitting you guys up with a post this week!

Preventing Sports Injury!

Hey guys, I know I promised this a while back and I'm sorry! I got super busy this week and haven't had a chance to do this blog post! It's Friday night so I have enough time now! Without further ado! I present to you "Preventing Sports Injury"

As always, don't forget to checkout the youtube channel! We have two now!

http://www.youtube.com/user/hashtagjp
http://www.youtube.com/user/rileythiessen
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The seven most common types of sports injuries include the following:

1) Ankle Sprain

2) Groin Pull

3) Hamstring Sprain

4) Shin Splints

5) Knee Injury: ACL tear

6) Knee Injury: Patellofemoral syndrome

7)  Epicondylitis

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now no one wants to go to the hospital and visit the doctors for some injury that could've been easily prevented, correct?
I know personally I've had many injuries where I was forced to go to the hospital even though I could've simply stretched, or worn protective equipment to prevent the injury from ever happening.

Some ways to prevent sports injuries are:

1) Be in the proper physical shape to play a sport!
This includes being physically active outside of a sport. For example, if you play basketball you shouldn't expect it to be your only option to get into shape! Lots of injuries can be prevented by being active enough where your muscles are used to being pushed.

2) Warm up!
It's never a good idea to just bolt into heavy physical exercise, you should always get warmed up first! Even stretching should wait until you're slightly warm so go for a litlle jog, stretch and then do your physical activity.

3) Wear the appropriate gear and protective equipment for the sport!
Protective pads, mouth guards, helmets, gloves and other equipment is super important when it comes to sports especially very physical sports! Protective equipment can save you so much, you should always make sure to be wearing it.

4) Resting!
MAKE SURE TO REST! If your body is feeling extra sore one day, take a day off! It's much better to get rested and then play a sport rather than thinking you can do anything and ending up getting hurt.

Remember guys, if you experience any sort of injury make sure to check out the doctor's instead of just thinking nothing's wrong. If you have pain, get it checked out!

Thanks so much for reading and I hope you guys all have an awesome weekend!

Hey guys check it out!!

Chicago vs. New York

Holy crap! I hope some of you were watching that game cause it was fricking CRAZY...
Derrick Rose came back from missing 13 games I believe and had a pretty bad start compared to his usual with 5 turnovers and 7 points in the first half, he turned it around in the second half though and finished with 29 points 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The game ended up going into overtime after Melo hit a quick three (Bastard I <3 Chicago). Anywho, The knicks won 100-99 so it was a super close game and Melo finished with 43 points, a season high!

Wow, anyways that was a sick game to watch! :)
Hope everyone had a pleasant Easter weekend!

Becoming a Successful Shooter (Part 2)

Hey guys, It's Riley and I'm just going to post some tips on shooting today, and how I think you all can become effective shooters! This is part 2, so if you haven't read part one, please check out this link!

http://rljpsports.blogspot.ca/2011/06/basketball-shooting-technique.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright! So here we are, shooting bootcamp 101 ;) ! Haha just kidding, but seriously folllow these steps and I can guarantee you'll be successful.

Lets start with some traits that all great shooters have in common!

Consistent shot mechanics:

No matter how your form is, whether you have a picture perfect shot, or you shoot like Shawn Marion, it's important that you're always shooting the same way, EVERYTIME. No matter where you are on the court, your shot has to be consistent. This means picking a consistent target as well. I've heard coaches say "Make sure to always look at the back of the rim when shooting", and other coaches saying "Make sure you're looking directly in the middle of the hoop when shooting". My personal take on this is first of all, pick a comfortable target. If you pick the back of the rim, fine. Just keep in mind that when you're shooting from the baseline, although you're aiming for the back of the rim you are actually aiming for the opposite side of the rim. I personally look at the center because I feel that is always a consistent target you look at and I've based my philosophy off of Dave Hopla one of the best shooters in the world. The most important part though is being CONSISTENT. The further away from the hoop you get, your form shouldn't change it should just speed up.

Feeling

I'm someone who believes that in order to be a successful shooter you have to have a good 'feel' for the ball. If you ask a great shooter why they're so good, I guarantee most of them wouldn't be able to answer the question specifically, but in actuality the reason they're so good is because their feel for the ball. Feel is something that develops from repetition. It's the type of feeling where as soon as that ball leaves your hands you already know It's going in. The most important thing about feel is as soon as you miss, you know exactly why you missed and you're able to correct it instantaneously.

Comfort

Have you ever heard all those words in your head as you were shooting, telling yourself you need absolutely perfect form, or telling yourself to keep your elbow in, or to follow through correctly. Haven't you noticed that when you concentrate on all that stuff, your shot almost never goes in. Comfort is all about being comfortable with YOUR shot, and knowing how you shoot everytime and making sure It's always the same. When you overthink that way, it leads to your shot feeling uncomfortable and forced. Make sure your shot is comfortable and work on one thinga at a time instead of telling yourself all this crazy stuff.

Confidence ********

You're probably wondering why I starred confidence, and well the reason I did is because once you become a great shooter, confidence is literally the most important thing. Having confidence is believing that everytime you release that ball, It's going straight through that net. When you're confident it allows your mind to take a break which keeps you focused. Once you develop that consistent shot, BELIEVE IN IT. Do not hesitate when you are open, you know you're a shooter, so shoot the damn ball!!

That about wraps it up for today, I hope you guys enjoyed my post and hope you all are having a pleasant weekend I'll see you with a post on Thursday!! Have a good night everybody!

-Riley

What has been happening lately - Justin

Hey everyone! Long time no talk at all, I am very sorry, but with this little blog I quickly made I'm telling you whatsup for the next little while.

I didn't reach my goal of making AAA, I got cut and played high school. I didn't score, or do anything fancy averaging about 0.6 points a game. This year was a developing year. The season ended, and now I'm onto the off season (my favourite part)

I am attending NRG for a 7 month basis opposed to 2 months like last year. On top of this I am playing more than just hockey to become more of an overall athlete! I picked up basketball, I haven't played since grade 8 when I was a star. I started playing again, and I am not to bad.

With basketball I will be training on a consistent basis with Riley, on top of all the hockey training. I feel working on my vert, foot speed, explosiveness, and cardio with make me a overall better athlete and hockey player and I get all of that out of a fun sport I love (basketball)!

Another reason why I got cut from AAA last year was because I was focused to much on just lifting weights and getting stronger, this year I will be focusing on cardio and speed, while maintaining my muscle, and going on ice more. On top of that I am the older age for midget AAA this year so my chances of making it increase a tremendous amount!

Sorry for this short blog, I have to get up early tomorrow!

Follow us, and me and Riley's journey to becoming successful athletes and to maybe play pro one day.
